Dorset Beach House / Architecture for London

This project is a refurbishment of an early 20th-century, timber-framed beach house on the Ballard Estate in Swanage, Dorset. The house is located on the seafront, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This fully serviced Beach Support Facility is located at Praia da Barra in Ílhavo, respecting the Ovar–Marinha Grande Coastal‑Zone Management Plan. That plan, in force since 2017, required the facility to be moved east of the boardwalk that links the local beaches, with the consequent demolition of the existing structure. Formally, the building is defined by its annular geometry, which shields users from prevailing northerly winds on the south‑facing terrace while reducing visual impact by aligning the ring's internal void with one of the dune's highest points. For centuries, the circular plan has been associated with unity, harmony and even eternity, encouraging spatial continuity.

Yulin old town is located in the northern part of Shaanxi Province and was built in the Ming Dynasty. Since the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, it has been one of the important nine frontier towns in China. The walls of the old town are well preserved. The Central Street, which runs through the north and south in the middle of town, has six towers standing on the street, is called the "Six-Tower Street".

The building is located within the former height-restricted zone of the old Shui Nan Airport. The once low-density farmlands and vegetable gardens had formed a maze of winding alleys. After urban redevelopment, what remained was an address that could no longer be precisely located — "Lane 10" — which became both the origin of the project's name and its design concept.
