Typically used for urgent protection and defense, they symbolize fear, pressure, and resistance. But in this work, they are stripped of weight. Instead of sand - air. Instead of threat - silence.

Our reflection on commerce considers what kind of architecture and interior effect can be presented in a small courtyard located near the Guomao CBD in Beijing, enabling competition with the surrounding chain coffee brands and boutique coffee shops. The aim is not only to attract people but also to provide a space where they can linger, stay, and be willing to make repeat purchases. Therefore, we proposed the somewhat avant-garde idea of 'building a greenhouse in Beijing's CBD,' which incorporates a garden into the indoor relaxation area.

Today, the beauty market is no longer confined to simply decorating one's appearance. It has become a language of its own—revealing personal tastes, allowing one to encounter another side of oneself through diverse styles. Beauty now extends beyond external styling, evolving into a multifaceted culture that expresses identity, self-care, and one's way of life.

NCKU Art Lounges Da Hsin Yuan / MAYU architects

NCKU Art Lounges is situated at the heart of National Cheng Kung University, facing the remnants of the Tainan City Wall and its West Gate through a tree-lined avenue. It neighbors the University President's Residence and lies along the primary green belt and student activities within the campus. Originally used as a kindergarten, the site has been transformed into a novel type of public space within the university, made possible by this project, welcoming students, faculty, residents, and alumni to visit at any time.
