Syndal South Primary School / WHDA

Syndal South Primary School is an educational hub in the leafy urban area of Mount Waverley on the lands of the Woi Wurrung Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the new Block A building of Syndal Primary School replaces an aging asbestos laden LTC building with new Administrative offices, Junior Classrooms, and a publicly accessible Library. The design proposal aims to contextualise the proposed Block A in its suburban setting by incorporating familiar domestic archetypes of the front porch and the verandah into circulation spaces and thresholds. The majority of the spaces are consolidated under a single roof which pitches north and south in deference to the neighbourhood street and to avoid overshadowing existing hardcourt play areas.

Belleville Sara Weill-Raynal Nursing Home Reconstruction and Extension / Avenier Cornejo Architectes

Rechristened Sara Weill-Raynal as a tribute to the Parisian doctor and Socialist activist of that name, the former Belleville nursing home in the 20th arrondissement welcomed its new residents on 17 May after a five-year refurbishment programme. Revelations about living conditions in certain nursing home have made elderly care into a burning issue. In this troubled context, the refurbishment of the Sara Weill-Raynal facility by Avenier Cornejo offers spatial responses that improve the lives of both residents and care staff. The renovation is one of the construction and restructuring initiatives carried out by the Centre d'Action Sociale de la Ville de Paris (CASVP) whose aim is to improve the quality of care facilities across Paris.

Hradby Residence / OOOOX

Realization of Hradby ranks among our most popular reconstructions. The object itself was interesting. Fortification guard house with a history dating back to the Middle Ages, vaulted ceilings on the ground floor, wooden painted ceilings on the first floor, original tiled stove. Enlightened clients, who approached the reconstruction very carefully and responsibly, were an absolutely essential ingredient of this realization. The goal was to restore as many elements as possible and to complement the entire space sensitively with a modern interior. When we got involved in the project, the layouts of the individual floors were given. The social part of the house is located on the entrance floor - a large living room with a dining room, a separate kitchen and a guest room in the original unnecessary garage. Upstairs, there is another living room and bedroom with bathrooms.

Living on Hohentorsplatz / Hild und K

'Hohentorsplatz' is located on the periphery of Bremen's historic Neustadt ramparts. A great variety of urban development projects aim at enlivening this part of the city centre. One being to create more attractive subsidised and privately let housing. This was the context of the competition launched by the Bremen housing company GEWOBA for the development of a former car park. The vision was to develop a multi-storey residential building to explore "the possibility of accentuating the urban space in a special way". The award-winning design by Hild und K implemented the underlying specifications in an unusual form – an eight-storey staggered structure. The hexagonal floor area of the residential building makes use of the wedge-shaped building plot to create an urban accent. The residential tower is prominently located at the tip of the site like a polygonal 'prow', creating a distinguishing entrance to the quarter when viewed from the nearby 'Neustadtwallanlagen'.
