Are Living Rooms Still Relevant? 16 Projects that Explore how these Private Gathering Spaces Adapt to the Contemporary Home

Today, architecture has become - or is in the process of becoming - more flexible and individualistic to accommodate people's diverse lifestyles and spatial needs. With this adaptation, the residential typology has changed and living rooms have become endangered. Many insist on the need of having a space dedicated to relaxation and leisure, while others claim it is simply a waste of space and money. This debate raised an important question: do we still need living/sitting rooms? In this interior focus, we will look at how living rooms evolved through the years, and how architects readapted and integrated the concept of “gathering space” in contemporary residential architecture.

The plot is located approximately 20km from Barcelona, in a residential neighborhood of St. Vicenç dels Horts. It is bordered to the east, west, and south by a set of built parcels, and opens to the north, to Valls Street. The land has two distinct levels. On the upper level, an old tool shed reveals the agricultural origin of the site. On the lower level, a small dilapidated building invites the construction of a new home, recalling old building traditions of the area.

MAST Transforms a Former Quarry in Milan, Italy, into a Central Park and Floating Forest

Danish Maritime Architecture Studio MAST, working together with the Municipality of Segrate, plans to transform a former sand quarry into a central park to reconnect the surrounding neighbourhoods and create a new destination for the residents of Milan, Italy. The abandoned quarry has left behind a unique landscape. The off]ice’s proposal includes a series of buildings along the lake’s perimeter linked by a public walkway and a cluster of islands in the centre of the lake. MAST is currently working with the Municipality of Segrate toward realising the project.
