2 Courtyard House / Robertson Design

A fairly simple building, this house has two distinctive features, the 35-foot cantilever of the 2nd floor and the atypical site plan with dual courtyards substituted for the traditional suburban backyard. Both of these features are a direct result of 3 fairly prosaic goals: the client’s desire for privacy, an efficient use of the pie-shaped lot, and a façade that isn’t dominated by a garage door. Layered over these requests is the architect’s inclination to create a highly controlled and beautiful entry experience. The building itself consists of 2 (roughly) rectangular volumes that are connected by a glazed hallway.

Horta House / [ ] MATÉRIAS arquitetura + interiores

The conceptual idea for the house has as its cornerstone a simple design inspired by the Minho containment plots of land for cultivation, as well as its annexes to support agriculture. A (very important) sustainable concern is also associated to the project: the distribution of the spaces was made according to functionality criteria and the insertion of renewable energies and bioclimatic systems.

Peristilio House / B2A

Peristilio is a 60m2 home extension that includes the enlargement of the living room, enhancing the connection between interior living spaces and the home’s garden. Designed in response to the client’s wish for a compact, but spacious home extension the sensitively responded to the site conditions. Located in the Dutch province of Utrecht, Netherlands, B2A drew inspiration from further afield, with a perimeter colonnade structure. This recollects a Roman peristilio blurring the line between the garden, terrace, and interior, while still presenting a modern structure that reconciles with the local built environment.
