Architecture Above: 25 Observation Towers Around the World

The desire to see the world from above transcends cultures and time — an almost instinctive impulse to seek new horizons, gain perspective, and momentarily step outside everyday life. Observation towers embody that desire: built in forests, mountains, urban parks, or coastal landscapes, they invite us to pause, look closely, and discover the surroundings in a quiet or playful way. These structures offer more than just views; they offer experiences. As we climb their steps or ramps, our bodies take part in a ritual of transition — from ground to sky.

Wonder Cabinet / AAU ANASTAS

The Wonder Cabinet's main aim is to serve as a haven for culture and creativity and a bridge between design and production. It is a space for experimental productions between producers, including architects, designers, chefs, artisans, sound, and visual artists. It is also a space that points out the under-represented capacities of production in Palestine. The country is usually studied and analyzed; the Wonder Cabinet stands as a physical space to produce from, not only to look at.

House Azóia AIP / João Tiago Aguiar, Arquitectos

Situated on a steep promontory overlooking the cliffs of Azóia, this architectural intervention stems from the desire for an architecture that fades away to make room for the place. The house dissolves into the topography, merging with the horizon and resonating with the scale of the site. The original construction, composed of a windmill and three interconnected volumes of distinct geometries, revealed complex intersections and a roof with unique slopes, which called for a refined yet precise gesture in the spatial reinterpretation.
