Rethinking Mixed-Use Architecture: 8 Conceptual Projects That Integrate Nature, Culture, Work, Play, and Community

From forest-inspired offices in Sweden to jungle-nest clubhouses in Tulum, mixed-use architecture continues to evolve as a tool for integrated living. As cities grow and our expectations of public, private, and commercial space shift, designers are increasingly rethinking how different functions including work, play, rest, learning, can coexist in a single architectural language. These projects suggest that buildings and projects no longer need to silo activities, but rather choreograph them to reflect the rhythms of everyday life.

In the dense urban fabric of Vietnam's big cities, small-scale mixed-use developments have emerged as a response to the dominance of typical shophouses. Ideally, this. building type, when coupled with solid business models and thoughtful design solutions, unlocks a site's potential, benefitting not just owners and tenants but the broader community. Yet too often, rushed and poorly designed projects have resulted in unsafe, uncomfortable, and inefficient commercial buildings.

"We need to change the way we think about libraries," a remark from a stage technician during one of many discussions with city officials and facility managers. This renovation project centers on MirikaRoden Nakagawa, a multi-purpose cultural complex located in Nakagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The facility brings together a public library, a multi-purpose hall, and a lifelong learning center. Positioned in the heart of the city and surrounded by amenities such as a children's center and an indoor swimming pool, the complex serves as a vibrant hub for civic culture and community recreation.

Youyi Bay Community, Mi Casa Su Casa Club Hotel, and Juanzong Apartment / genarchitects

Youyi Bay, a small community comprised of a group of buildings and several plazas, is situated at the southern entrance of the 'Aranya North Shore Community' in Qinhuangdao. It serves as the central hub for public activities in the southern part of the entire North Shore community. As the nearest coastal resort to Beijing, Qinhuangdao is a highly popular tourist destination. The Aranya community has long been renowned for hosting various cultural and artistic events, attracting many families, freelancers, and artists to reside and create here. We aim to create a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood at Youyi Bay, serving both the community and visitors, through a blend of functions and spatial planning, offering a pleasant scale and intimate atmosphere.
