Architecture firm HWKN has been commissioned by Al Marwan Real Estate Development to design eleven distinct buildings for a new commercial neighborhood in central Sharjah, the third most populous city in the United Arab Emirates. The district, featuring offices, retail spaces, cafés, childcare and healthcare facilities, specialized institutes, and a mosque, has been fully researched, conceptualized, and planned using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Back to Front House / Ian Moore Architects

Originally one of a row of 4 identical sandstone terrace houses built in 1863, the house was entered via a long front garden from Victoria Street. In 1980, the front half of the site was subdivided off and another building constructed on the Victoria Street frontage, leaving a small remnant of the front garden as a now rear courtyard and the main entry consigned to the rear lane. A two-storey brick rear wing was added at a later date, containing the kitchen and a bathroom.

The site faced a wide street, with street trees providing a scenic background. The client requested a house where the family can enjoy the view of the street, trees, and suggested using exposed concrete.

Guizhou Media Vocational and Technical School Library & Information Center / West-line studio

Located in Qingzhen, an up and coming district west of Guiyang, the capital city of Guizhou province, the Library and Information Center is placed at the heart of the Guizhou Media Vocational and Technical School, a 20 hectares campus to be completed in 2026. The district of Qingzhen has an important educational legacy, dating back to the early 1900, when the area witnessed the flourishing of church-run schools, which helped broadening the access to education. To honor this unique legacy, the architects played with heights and natural light, filtered through colored glasses and iconic skylights, to recreate a meditative but grand atmosphere, almost spiritual, a reference to those churches which constitute such a meaningful chapter of regional history.
