Foodscapes: The Winning Proposal for the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023

The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has recently unveiled the winning proposal of the competition for the selection of the curatorship and exhibition design of the Spanish pavilion at the 18th edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale, which will be open to the public from May 21st to November 26th, 2023.

The Architectural Identity of the State House

Known as the state house, the presidential palace, and an assortment of other terms — the building that hosts a country’s seat of government is usually quite architecturally striking. Frequently opulent, grand, and sometimes imposing, the state house is intended to function as a visually distinct marker of a nation — an extension of a state’s identity. In the African continent, a landmass that had seen a significant part of it colonized by European nations, this identity of statehood, in an architectural sense, is complex.

La Riche Clubhouse / Bauchet de La Bouvrie Architects

The new facility is located within the Petit Plessis sports complex. Visible from the ring road to the west, it signals the playground and the town entrance. The building, made of wood frame and framework, is divided into four single-story volumes, articulated around a patio and connected by a single sloping roof. Located at the corner of the building, four entrances provide access to a sheltered exterior corridor that runs through the entire building.

The Gamelle Laboratory / Inrestudio

The Gamelle is a small laboratory for product inspection in a factory in central Vietnam. Located by the sea at the edge of the site, the building aims to provide views of nature while protecting it from excessive exposure to the sea breeze. An outer wall encloses both functional rooms and exterior spaces, constituting a porous structure to mediate between the internal and external environment. The project has the ambiguity of the entity: eye-catching like a solid pavilion, and yet eye-penetrating to the scenery beyond with its transparency.
