We have reached the end of 2022 and it is time to review the most important milestones of the year on ArchDaily. This time, we searched for the photos that were the most liked on ArchDaily's Instagram.

The year 2022 was marked by several socio-cultural and economic crises across the globe, from the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the increasing cost of living worldwide, combined with a number of natural disasters such as the devastating floods in Pakistan and hurricane Ian in the US. In these difficult times, architects are stepping up and embracing their role in developing design-based solutions to humanitarian crises, ranging from temporary shelters and affordable housing schemes to centers for protecting at-risk groups such as homeless underage girls, children from low-income environments, or families in need of medical care.

SHIYEFENGWU Store / Tuo + Urban Wave

The store is located at the core of the space, facing the end of the entrance passage. Consider placing important functions, such as map wall, exhibition stand, shared kitchen, to a relatively complete square space in the lower half. The overall space is relatively limited. Different functions are modularized, becoming partitions of the space. Floorings and ceilings are corresponding to program zones, which increases the richness of experience.

Foster + Partners’ Bilbao Fine Arts Museum Extension Breaks Ground

The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum remodeling and expansion project was attributed to Foster + Partners following an international competition in 2019. Now the construction phase was initiated with a breaking ground ceremony on November 17th. The project includes the restoration of the existing 20th-century building and the expansion of the currently available spaces with a new public atrium and a contemporary art gallery organized in a floating pavilion. The design also highlights the relationship between the city and the museum by creating a new pedestrian path that runs from north to south. The path connects the original 1945 building, the 1970s extension, and a new visitor center while making the site more permeable at the street level.
