Surf House / DRAWING WORKS

Yangyang, a surf city - Yangyang, which embraces Mount Seoraksan and the East Sea, is known as a city with wonderful sceneries of the mountains and seas.  It is a small city with a population of 28,000 people but it attracted a steady stream of tourists who visited Yangyang for abundant tourist attractions. However, Yangyang has changed over the past few years. As the city suddenly emerged as a surfing attraction in the country, young people started coming to Yangyang. As people gathered to surf, restaurants, cafes, and shops were also built and the city, which used to face limits in regional development due to an aging society, was revitalized at last. The transformation in the city from surf culture did not only enliven tourism but also caused an influence the influx of the population. Surfers started to build houses around beaches where it is great to surf.  Furthermore, improvement in transportation infrastructure deserves to be noted as a background of regional activation. The opening of the Seoul-Yangyang Expressway in 2018 enhanced accessibility to the capital area and initiated the supply of houses. Likewise, Yangyang is basking in a renaissance from surfing.

Mosman Minka House / Downie North Architects

Mosman, Australia. Situated in coastal suburban Sydney, Mosman Minka respects the area’s conservative built heritage but subverts its traditions by embracing Japanese sensibilities. Retaining the original frontage, the rear spaces are enveloped by an oversized zinc canopy, whose vaulted forms lend spaciousness to an otherwise highly efficient footprint. With a focus on place-making, proportions, materiality, and detailing drawn from the family’s collective memories. The design embraces family life’s dichotomies: it is at once calm and restful (an important counterpoint to hectic family life), whilst equally playful and punctuated by numerous moments of delight.

Diagon Commercial Building / Moon Hoon

Haebangchon means Freedom or Liberation town, located near Itawon and Yongsan, where many foreign nationals and US army personnel reside. It has recently been retrofitted with many hip Korean and western bars and restaurants, where the young international crowd mingles. The site is at the hilltop where great views of the city are available. (only when you reach the rooftop).

Techi House / ODA - Oficina de Arquitectos Lanzone - Gabarro

This project arises from the commission to build a house with a limited budget, where a comfortable life can be enjoyed. We agree that luxury lies in living in a context surrounded by mountains, pastures, and carob trees, and this responds to the highest expectation:
[The place is more important than the house]
