Exploring Vulnerable Habitats in the XXII Chile Architecture Biennial

After the interruption of the 2019 edition due to the Social crisis in Chile, the Chilean Architecture Biennial returned to Santiago in January 2023 under the theme of 'Vulnerable Habitats', addressing issues such as "the emergence of the housing deficit in a context in which slums, informality, and illegal land takeovers have increased in recent years" and "the vulnerability and deterioration of public spaces; the urgent protection of tangible heritage; and environmental vulnerability in a context of a climate crisis."

How To Take Advantage of the Space Under The Bed

Over the last few years, we have explored different ways of taking advantage of small spaces in residential architecture, particularly in the last decade. From efficient furniture to kitchens with transformable systems to adapting essential household appliances, architects have begun looking for effective ways of optimizing scarce floor space or making spaces more flexible in multifunctional and mixed-use typologies.

North Salem Farm / Worrell Yeung Architecture

Worrell Yeung’s North Salem Farm project, the design, and renovation of a collection of new and existing buildings for a family in upstate New York, continues the studio’s interest in expressing architectural volume through a simplification of the elements. Set within the agrarian landscape of Westchester County, this family home was designed to be thoughtfully integrated into the landscape.

The Boat House / Maguire + Devine Architects

Designed for a writer and her Husband, the boathouse sits perched on the banks of the River Derwent in Southern Tasmania.  It is a small (ancillary) dwelling, dovetailed into the lush garden of their midcentury Myrtle-clad family home.  It celebrates the experience of living on the water's edge, offering sanctuary and protection from the wild weather that blows in from the sea.
